Journalism in Ukraine Briefing: Then and Now

Tuesday, January 25, 2005 (9:00AM-10:30AM)

Then and Now: Journalism in Ukraine Before and During the Orange Revolution.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty invites you to a briefing by

  • Kyrylo Bulkin, Chief Editor, NART Radio (Kyiv, Ukraine)
  • Alla Vantsak, Director, AB-Radio (Kirovohrad, Ukraine)
  • Olesya Sadova, Program Director, Nezalezhnist Radio (Lviv, Ukraine)
  • Stanislav Zaychenko, Director, Radio Three (Zaporozhiya, Ukraine)

Much has been written about the manner in which Ukrainian authorities worked to control the local media during the months leading up to the presidential election. Even more has been said about the way the media threw off government control and provided dramatic coverage of the popular revolt that broke out after the much-criticized November 21 runoff election. Four radio station executives from various parts of Ukraine, in the U.S. to participate in a U.S. State Department-sponsored International Visitor's Program (IVP) administered by the Delphi International Program of World Learning, will describe what it was like for them to broadcast news before -- and during -- the Orange Revolution.

Kyrylo Bulkin is Chief Editor for NART Radio in Kyiv, which has been on the air since August 2004. Prior to becoming Chief Editor, Bulkin hosted the program "Situation" on Ukrainian television. Olesya Sadova, Program Director of Nezalezhnist (Independence) Radio in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, is also the anchor for analytical programs and talk shows on the station. Alla Vantsak has been Director of AB-Radio in Kirovohrad, south of Kyiv, since 1997. Stanislav Zaychenko, the Director of Radio Three and of the "Reklamne Pole" advertising agency in Zaporozhiye, broadcasts to an audience of over 1 million in the area surrounding this southeastern Ukrainian city.
