Conference: UACC Roundtable Series - Ukraine's Quest for Mature Nation StatehoodSeptember 27-28, 2005
The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) is once again co-sponsoring the Roundtable Series Ukraine's Quest for Mature Nation Statehood. On the backdrop of the “Orange Revolution," the sixth annual conference will focus on “Ukraine’s Transition to an Established National Identity.” The two-day conference will bring together government and key NGO representatives of Ukraine, the United States and several of Ukraine’s neighbors as well as experts from academia to evaluate Ukraine’s ability to develop a “firm center of gravity as a nation state” and to define its “distinct place in global affairs”, particularly in the aftermath of the historic “Orange Revolution.” A veritable Who's Who from the American, Ukrainian and European governmental, NGO and private sectors, including Borys Tarasyuk, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Victor Pynzenyk, Ukraine’s Minister of Finance, Janusz Onyszkiewicz, European Parliament Vice President, and Condoleezza Rice, United States Secretary of State, have been invited to provide insight regarding the main features of the contemporary face of Ukraine. Such conferences are vital for opening up lines of communication and strengthening bilateral relations between the United States and Ukraine. Background: The Ukraine's Quest for Mature Nation Statehood Roundtable Series began when a number of Ukrainian and American organizations convened in April of 2000, to consider ways to facilitate a more engaged dialogue between the U.S. and Ukraine. These deliberations gave rise to a commitment: to convene an annual conference that would bring together prominent representatives from academia, the private sector and the governments of Ukraine, the United States and Europe, to monitor Ukraine's progress towards fuller integration into the Euro-Atlantic community and stronger bilateral relations with the United States. To date, five such Roundtables have been held: RT I: Ukraine's Quest for Mature Nation Statehood RT II: Taking Measure of a U.S. - Ukraine Strategic Partnership RT III: Ukraine and the Euro-Atlantic Community RTIV: Ukraine’s Transition to a Developed Market Economy RTV: Ukraine’s Transition to a Stable Democratic Polity The conferences have resulted in improved cooperation between the governments of Ukraine and the United States on matters of mutual concern. Furthermore, the forums have proven to be an invaluable opportunity for the establishment of business-to-business contacts resulting in increased trade and investments between Ukraine and the country's largest foreign investor, the United States. Finally, the series has provided an annual forum for think tanks and policy advisors from both countries to discuss ‘topics of the moment’ that are of bilateral importance.
