REVIEWING AND CRITIQUING THE EXISTING SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN UKRAINE

Presentation by Taras Lychuk

Taras Lychuk is a Visiting Professor from the Ukrainian State University of Water Management and Nature Conservation in Rivne, Ukraine. He is also a Junior Faculty Development Program* 2003/04 fellow presently affiliated with the University of Maryland.

The speaker will address issues related to the current system of Ukrainian higher education with an emphasis on existing problems including, but not limited to, corruption, high levels of student unemployment post-graduation, and insufficient quantity of professional books and magazines in university libraries. Possible solutions to these problems will be discussed. Also to be addressed are differences in teaching methodologies in Ukrainian and American schools.

*The JFDP is a non-degree, professional development program administered by the American Councils for International Education (ACTR/ACCELS) that provides promising junior university faculty with the opportunity to:

- develop new courses and implement curriculum reform at their home institutions;
- become a vehicle for on-going contact and exchange between their home and host institutions.
- expand the information base in their fields of study, and
- cultivate teaching skills and techniques based on personal observation of U.S. educational methods.
