Women's Leadership and Environmental Health Program Seeks Escort Interpreters

November 8 - 12, 1998

Hi all - you or your Russian speaking friends might be interested in the following PAID opportunity to interpret for a group of West NIS women environmentalists that ISAR is hosting in November. The $ rates are given at the bottom. Note that the 3 day commitment includes work days, not just weekends, which may be tough - so please share this widely!

Thanks, Sheila

ISAR is pleased to announce a training program for women leaders from the environmental movement in Belarus, Moldova, and Ukraine. The program is made possible by support from the United States Information Agency and the Trust for Mutual Understanding. ISAR will bring eight women, all members of grassroots groups, to the US for a three-week period in late-autumn 1998.

The program's content will focus on the relationship between the environment and human health, and on the importance of women's leadership in grassroots coalition-building to promote safer communities and more engaged citizenries. During their time in the US, participants will:

  • visit national- and regional-level environmental health organizations in greater Washington, DC;
  • travel across the state of Pennsylvania, meeting with grassroots women activists working on environmental health issues facing their communities;
  • participate in a women's leadership training with US counterparts; and
  • take part in individualized mini-internships at grassroots organizations in the eastern US.

We are presently looking for individuals to serve as "escort interpreters" for program participants during their three-day mini-internships. Escort interpreters will travel with one participant from Washington, DC, to her internship site, spend three days interpreting for the participants at the host organization, and return to Washington, DC, with the participant. The escort interpreter will spend three to four nights (depending on travel schedules) with the participant at her home stay (to be arranged by host organization).

Escort Interpreters should have:

  • a strong command of both Russian and English
  • prior experience interpreting in either formal or informal settings
  • the ability to work effectively one-on-one as well as in a group setting
  • an interest in cross-cultural citizen exchanges
  • willingness to travel by plane or train to rural or urban sites on the east coast of the US and to live in a home stay setting

Preference will be given to those candidates with experience in working on grassroots environmental and/or women's leadership issues in a cross-cultural context.

Escort interpreters will receive $140/day for three internship days, $70/day for two travel days (to and from site), and $20/day per diem allowance for all five days. Airfare/train fare is covered by ISAR.

For more information on the program or to express interest in working as an escort interpreter, please contact Miranda Lutyens at the address and phone number below or by e-mail at miranda@isar.org.
