The exhibit features approximately thirty maps of Ukraine from the Renaissance to the 20th century, excerpted from the Bohdan and Neonila Krawciw Ucrainica Map collection.  Donated to the Harvard Map Collection and the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute in 2005, the collection now constitutes the largest single collection of Ukrainian maps in North America.  Over many decades, Bohdan Krawciw (1904-1975), the prominent Ukrainian-American journalist, poet, and scholar traced the physical and aesthetic depiction of Ukraine in cartography as an aspect of the cultural and political history of a contested borderland nation/state and its peoples at the crossroads of empires:  Habsburg, Ottoman, Russian, and Soviet.  The maps will remain on display until May 7th.

Orange Revolution MOVIE SCREENING

WHERE:
The Rosslyn Spectrum, “Just across from Key Bridge”

WHEN:

The American Film Institute named Orange Revolution,Steve York’s uplifting documentary, one of the “best and brightest of… thrilling documentary filmmaking from around the world.” The riveting footage, intimate interviews, and live musicrecreate Ukraine’s nonviolent revolution of 2004 – the decade’s most successful victory over political thuggery.

The 111-minute documentary screened in Kyiv to critical acclaim, just as in Melbourne, Toronto, Seattle, and San Francisco, where it was nominated for a Golden Gate Award.

Two hours past midnight. on November 22, 2004, the call went out:

The time has come to defend your life and Ukraine. Your victory depends on how many people can say ‘No’ to this government, ‘No’ to the election’s total falsification.”

The corrupt sitting president controlled the media, and the media claimed Viktor Yanukovych, his hand-picked successor, to be the victor. But exit polls showed that the opposition candidate, Viktor Yushchenko, had actually won.

Yushchenko’s poisoning had shocked the world, but when reports came in of voter intimidation, damaged ballots, multiple voting, the people finally acted. In freezing temperatures, a million citizens poured into Kyiv’s street to form human barricades around government buildings, paralyzing all state functions. Restaurants donated food; friends brought blankets and clothing; businesses sent tents. Rock bands kept up spirits with around-the-clock open-air concerts. For seventeen days, ordinary citizens kept up an extraordinary resistance, demanding their votes be respected. They stood firm even when an army mobilized to confront them.

It’s exhilarating to watch when ordinary people, normally considered powerless, recognize their own power, and take action. We see Ukrainians, long described even by themselves as passive and apathetic, at a historic turning point.
