Conference Commemorating 20th Anniversary Of Chornobyl
Wednesday, April 26
The Kennan Institute, in cooperation with the University of Alberta and
the
Harriman Institute of Columbia University, will cosponsor a conference
on
April 25-26, 2006 in New York City (on April 25) and Washington DC (on
April
26): "Commemoration of the Chornobyl Disaster: The Human Experience
Twenty
Years Later."
The April 26 program at the Kennan Institute will include four panels
covering historic, health, environmental, and humanitarian perspectives
on
the disaster. The conference will also feature a photo exhibit by
Joseph
Sywenky, whose work on Chornobyl appeared in the "New York Times", and
a
screening of the Oscar-winning documentary "Chornobyl Heart", followed
by a
discussion.
Speakers at the Kennan Institute will include Oleh Shamshur, Ambassador
of
Ukraine to the United States; David Marples, Professor, University of
Alberta; Alla Yaroshinskaya, President, Center for Ecology Study and
Education in Moscow; Murray Feshbach, Senior Scholar, Woodrow Wilson
Center;
Leonard Mazur, Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund; Mary Mycio, author,
"The
Wormwood Forest - A Natural History of Chornobyl;" D.J. Peterson, RAND;
Irene Zabytko, author, "Te Sky Unwashed;" Sarah Phillips, Indiana
University; Maryann DeLeo, filmmaker and director "Chornobyl Heart;"
