Wednesday, February 22 (5:45 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.)
The Eurasia Center and its Friendship Society of Washington D.C. in
cooperation with His Excellency Mikhail Khvostov, Ambassador of
Belarus, &
Ms. Kathleen Ryan of the Chernobyl's Children's Project International
invites you and your colleagues to "Chernobyl 20th Anniversary - Honor
the
Past, Build the Future"
The Eurasia Center and its Friendship Society invite you to learn about
the
continued devastating affects caused by the explosion of the Chornobyl
Nuclear Reactor in 1986. 190 tons of toxic materials were expelled into
the
atmosphere as the nuclear plant burned for 10 days. This was 100 times
more
radiation than the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Almost
400,000 citizens were forced to leave their homes with over 2,000 towns
and
villages bulldozed to the ground. Twenty-two [22] per cent of the
Belarus
land mass was contaminated with 70 percent of the total fallout
deposited
there. Radiation spread over large parts of the Ukraine and Russia and
into
Scandinavia, Poland, Baltic states, Germany, Switzerland, France, and
England.
At 5:45 P.M. there will be opportunities for informal One-to-One
discussions
with His Excellency Mikhail Khvostov, Ambassador of Belarus and Ms.
Kathleen
Ryan of the Chernobyl's Children's Project International. At 6:15 P.M
The
Ambassador will speak about the long-term ecological, societal, and
political costs of the accident. Mr. Pavel Shidlovsky, Counselor, will
review the economic devastation of the disaster, continuing recovery
costs,
and international Chornobyl cooperation.
The One-to-One session and reception that follows the presentations
will
feature special foods, beverages, and music of Belarus.
The Evening's proceedings and reception will be videotaped for

the
Chernobyl accident. Thirty percent of the evening’s donations will be

projects
of The Eurasia Center. Further information about the International
