Musical Performance: Gogol Bordello

Saturday, February 19, 2005 (9:30PM)

Gogol Bordello is a NYC-based group that blends elements of punk, gypsy music and Brechtian cabaret to tell fantastic, theatrical tales as only a Ukrainian political refugee can -- thick with dark humor and drenched in debauchery. Frontman Eugene H*tz cut his teeth on black-market cassettes of noise-rock bands like the Birthday Party and Einst*rzende Neubauten while honing his chops on the gypsy music he heard in Eastern European refugee camps.

Gogol Bordello's bizarre stage shows are intensified by the rich mix of musical styles -- Eastern European melodies gush out of saxes, accordions and violins, clashing with pounding punk-rock drums and frenzied guitars.

Imagine the avant-garde classical music of Bela Bartok butting heads with the experimental noise of Sonic Youth. It's not often that you can catch a band that's seeped in gypsy culture with a post-modern punk edge, so don't skip a chance to see an outfit that has already been banned from hometown clubs like CBGBs, Brownies, and the Mercury Lounge for its crazy antics.
