Discussion: Rhetoric of Presidential Elections in Ukraine

Tuesday, March 1, 2005 (12:00pm - 1:15pm)

During the historic 2004 presidential election campaign in Ukraine, the issue of language was crucial in defining the political orientation of the candidates. The language spoken by a candidate clearly signified his political preferences. Dr. Antonina Berezovenko, a Visiting Associate Professor at the Department of Slavic Languages at Columbia University, will discuss how language serves particular political goals and influences certain social groups, as well as examine public relations techniques relevant for today's Ukraine.
