Former European Parliament member
Maartje van Putten and former U.S. Representative Don Ritter traveled to
Ukraine in August and September, respectively, to monitor the on-going
presidential election as official election observers. Both former
legislators found significant irregularities and improprieties in the
election campaign in Ukraine. They will share the findings of their
respective missions, in an effort to further encourage the citizens and
governments in all countries to stand for free and fair elections in
Ukraine.
Three delegations comprised of 21
delegates--17 former U.S. Congressmen and 3 former
parliamentarians--have participated in this monitoring program, which
reports its findings to Ukraine's Central Election Commission, the U.S.
Government, European governments, international organizations and the
general public through release to the mass media. Delegates have
visited 28 small and medium-sized towns and cities in the Kharkiv,
Poltava, Sumy, Cherkasy, Kyiv, Kirovohrad, Kherson, Zaporizhzhya, and
Mykolayiv oblasts.
The delegations do not support any
candidate or political party. Programming is organized by the
U.S.-Ukraine Foundation (USUF), in partnership with the U.S. Association
of Former Members of Congress (USAFMC) and is funded by the United
States Agency for International Development (USAID).
