Baturyn was the capital of the Ukrainian Cossack Hetman State under Ivan Mazepa. When in the summer of 1708 Mazepa allied himself with Charles XII of Sweden, Russian Tsar Peter I sent his general Prince Menshikov to capture Baturyn. Menshikov's forces sacked and burned the city to the ground.
