Professor Kononenko LectureSunday, March 3, 2002 at 1:30 pmDr. NATALIE KONONENKO, Professor of Folklore at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, will speak about her forthcoming book "Ukrainian Ritual: Celebrating Marriage, Birth, and Death" at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family, 4250 Harewood Road, NE, WDC. Her latest book, "Ukrainian Minstrels" (www.brama.com/art/minstrelsbk.html), won numerous American and international book prizes. Professor Kononenko will present an illustrated lecture showing how ritual was changed during Soviet rule and how people in the villages of today are using ritual to establish a new, post-Soviet Ukrainian identity. Dr. Kononenko is currently constructing a folklore database, which will serve as a permanent showcase of Ukrainian culture and traditional folk arts. Admission is free. Refreshments.
