Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
and the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America invite you to a briefing by Andriy Shevchenko News Anchor, 5Kanal Television (Ukraine) Covering the Ukrainian Presidential Election Wednesday, September 15, 2004 9:00AM-10:30AM in Conference Room A (4th Floor) at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty 1201 Connecticut Ave NW [entrance on Rhode Island Ave NW, next to St. Matthew's Cathedral] Many observers point to the upcoming presidential elections in Ukraine, scheduled for October 31, as a pivotal moment in determining the future course of this Eastern European power. Allegations of dirty tricks, government instructions on how media outlets should cover the news, media bias and other attempts to control what Ukraine's electorate is told in the pre-election period have been made by numerous local and international monitoring organizations. Andriy Shevchenko, the news anchor for 5Kanal, the only major television not controlled by either the government or oligarchs supporting the candidacy of Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, will offer a first-hand view of the rewards and challenges of covering the presidential election in Ukraine. Andriy Shevchenko is a popular and highly respected journalist in Ukraine, who currently serves as a news anchor for the newly-established television station 5Kanal. Prior to this he worked for Novy Kanal television. Shevchenko is in Washington at the invitation of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, to participate in this week's "Ukraine's Transition to a Stable Democracy" roundtable. Please RSVP by email to <dc-response@rferl.org>, by telephone to Melody Jones at (202) 457-6949, or by fax to (202) 457-6992. |
